I was sent an engineering application program which
has a data entry window which, in 1024x768, has some
of its important areas off screen. In order to get it on
screen, I have to switch settings to 1152x864, and then
all mailbox text is tiny and difficult to read. Other people
using this same 'canned' program don't have this problem. I
have a 19" Optiquest Q95 monitor. Any suggestions as to
why this might be, or what I can do other than keep
switching settings as I go in and out of this application?

A few suggestions:
--Have you changed the global font size setting? Display> Settings>
Advanced. "Normal" is the 96% setting.

--Have any of the font settings in Display> Appearance been changed?

--Using ClearType? ClearType "fattens" up screen fonts horizontally by about
300%. By using the ClearType tuner, you might be able to keep the enhanced
screen font display but minimize the "spread" of screen elements. See
http://www.microsoft.com/typography and follow the links to What's New>
Clear Type Tuner.
