Hi
Have a problem with System Restore which worked a few weeks ago but now has
the following problems.
1) On System Restore tab, it shows that both C & D are being monitored but
option to turn off is greyed out.
2) If I try to run Sys Restore Wiz I get message "System Restore is not able
to protect your computer. Please restart computer and run S R again"
3) If I try to start SR from Services I get "Could not start SR on local
computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified"
4) Have done a re-install of XP over existing - update - to no effect.
5) Have plenty of space on both HD partitions
I know I have SR points in the system as these can be read via XP Tweak.
Have read various posts and info boards bu none seem to duplicate my problem
and could use some advice.

Hi Mal,
Start/run msconfig, go to the services tab. Disable (uncheck) the System =
Restore entry. Click apply/ok and reboot. Repeat the steps to reenable =
it.
If you get a message about missing files, then start/run sfc /scannow =
and let it scan the system for missing files. You may need your WinXP =
CD, so have it handy.

Mal,
I download programs from the internet and always had to redownload
them after a reboot. Then I bought a CD burner and started to burn
them to a CD (sometimes more involved than I prefer). Now I have a
60Gb drive for my secondary drive and have put two folders on it.
One is my Downloaded folder where I have all of my downloaded software
and I have put a shortcut on my destop for easy access.
Second is My Documents folder (I moved it to the second drive with a
shortcut on the desktop too). This takes a little coercing to get
reloaded properly but once you've done it a couple of times it comes
easy.
Now when I need to reinstall a downloaded program it is on the
secondary drive which by the way never gets reformatted or reloaded,
same with the all important documents I need.
It is also the place where I put my favorites, mail contacts and
account settings for easier backing up.
Oh, did I mention, SCAN SCAN SCAN with anti virus before you do
anything with a downloaded program or file... Do the spy software
search on a regular basis too (SpyBot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware 6
or better).
Keep everything updated on a regular basis and you will have a longer
and happier freindship with your computer. I happen to be more than 2
years on this XP PRO load.
Firewalls help too.
Hope I helped!!!
