Using WinXP-Home,SP1. For no apparent reason Winfax is shown as
running in win task mgr, when it was not there before yesterday --
and don't know what I could have done to add it in since I use
Symantec's WinFaxPro.

In TaskMgr is "winfaxmod" and indicating the 56kmodem. It leads to
wfxmod32.exe. Msconfig/start doesn't have any new entries.
Msconfig/services "fax" was there which I unchecked, then rebooted.

When I open winfax module, can't find a method to edit to close it down.
Presumably this is using memory unnecessarily. How do we get rid of
this guy?

Hi Miles,

Go to the printers folder, right-click winfax and select properties. Go =
to the devices tab, click on the button to check properties of the =
modem. On the recieve tab, uncheck the box enabling the device to =
receive faxes. Apply/ok your way out.

Doesn't work! Went to control panel/printers/winfax/properties/device
settings/ where there is no button to check properties - only the
properties for halftone.

Went to the advanced tab and changed always available to available from
00.00 to 00.00. No change.

Opened the fax console and clicked on console configuration which causes
it to freeze -- tried several times.

In msconfig went to wfxmod32.exe and changed to end process, but on next
boot it's again running.

Can't access wizard, "all fax printers are inaccessible" at bottom of
fax console screen. Tried to send a fax and wizard opens, hit next
and it freezes.

In fax console properties under "file" is greyed out. FYI, have WinFax
and WinFax(Photo Quality) and both behave the same. Also have "fax"
which does nothing. Rick, I've exhausted my thoughts, hopefully you
have more???

Finally managed to get rid of it. In msconfig/services unchecked
winfaxpro and it went away on start up. Still don't know why it was
there since it is not set to receive msgs, nor to start with windows.

Thanks for the assist.
