i attempted to downloaded a movie and it now requires of me
somehting called a codec? what is this? At the end of the
title it also said "divx"? Could someone please explain
this to me?

This is a format for the video that you downloaded. You need to install a
codec (decoder) that understands the DIVX format.

download the free version if all your going to be doing is playing divx
coded files

and you dont need to install or use the player that comes with it. once
installed you can use any video playing app to play your divx video, even
Windows Media Player 9 or 8
