You need to goto Control Panel>Add Remove Programs.
Add Remove Windows Components.

But you'll find the options aren't available by default...
So the tweak...

Quote:
'Removing Extraneous Windows Components'
This tweak allows you to have more flexibility when enabling/disabling
Windows components, allowing you to remove the games, as well as other parts
of the OS that the installer generally doesn't allow you to mess with. To
perform the tweak, you need to open the sysoc.inf file (found in the
winnt/inf folder) in notepad. Within the file, there are several HIDE
commands - delete the word HIDE (but be careful to preserve the commas)
everywhere it appears and save the file. You should now have several more
options when adding and removing components through the add/remove programs
applet in the control panel.

If you make the tweak then goto Add/Remove Windows Components then you'll
have the options to reinstall/fix missing components.

HTH.

OK. I'm dumb to tweaking. I don't get it. I went to the
link you told me and I still don't have a clue. Could use
email me the step by step instructions for dummies? :-}

In reading all the posts on the volume control subject, I
think I would start with the simplest thing first.
Try going to the COMMAND PROMPT and when it opens---
type in sfc/scannow and press enter.
The program will run and check/repair/replace Window's
files. It is basically the same program as was in Win 98
which would check the files.
Running csf/scannow has fixed some little problems for me
several times.
just a thought,
XDon
