View Full Version : installing Windows XP Home Edition

I originally tried to install Windows XP Home Edition
(full) onto my new 80 Gig hard drive, after we tried to
install Windows 98 Second Edition. It appeared that this
installation disk had problems, so we went out and bought
Windows XP Home Edition. We asked it to do the install and
convert the files. This created problems. We called tech
support, and they left me hanging at 6 PM when they closed
today. We deleted the partition and reformatted the
partition and reinstalled the Windows XP Home Edition.
Everything was going well until it tried to save the
configuration (the message at the top of the screen says "
Please wait while setup initializes your Windows XP
configuration". That started 30 minutes ago. The hard
drive is spinning, but it is not reading anything, nor is
it reading any files from the CD. In other words, we are
stuck once more.

What do I do????

Please help. I would like to have my computer up and
running once more as soon as possible. We have been
working on this since 9 PM on Saturday, and it is now 7:15
PM on Sunday. No installation of any software should take
this long. I sure hope it's worth it when it does finally
work (if it ever will.... I have my doubts now about the
$199 I spent for this software).

Thanks for your help

Joyce;
Did you make sure everything was compatible with Windows XP:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/upgrading/default.asp

Try it this way:
Disconnect all peripherals (camera, printer, scanner, etc)
Go to BIOS and set CDROM as boot device before hard drive.
Insert Windows XP CD and reboot.
At "Press any key to boot to CDROM" quickly press a key and follow the
prompts for a Clean installation:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp
Delete all partitions in step 5 if you desire to erase all data on the
hard drive.
Partitioning and formatting will be done automatically.
All data will be destroyed, back-up important data first.

If your computer was shipped with Windows XP, these procedures may or
may not apply.
Check your manual or contact the computer manufacturer for more
details.
