View Full Version : Critical update won't install.

Q817287 critical update keeps coming up via the auto
update. I click install and it finishes and a couple days
later the same update pops up. I did a search and deleted
the 3 files it found with that # and went to the update
page and downloaded it again and got an error that said
try again.
Same error each time!

Did it say "successful install" (or similar verbiage) ?
Go to Windows Update, and then select & press "View install history". =
Does this item show "successful"?

Does the update log show an "Error" message line , for the date of this =
download?
Look at Windows Update.log file for the last date/time it went to =
Windows Update & get the "Error" notation, then look for a cure.
Use Windows' Notepad to open this log: =20
C:\Windows\Windows Update.log (for Win XP & Win98/Me)

Having found the "error" , then do a "search" on this MS page-- Windows =
Update Troubleshooter=20
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

Last, if truly the update had been sucessful, and this item is =
repeating:
See this MS article, "Windows Update Site Lists Updates That You =
Already Installed"

The log listed error each time I had tried the install so
I went to the troubleshooting page.

Tried all four fixes in the troubleshooting section and
still can't install it!

This is the problem caused by a corrupt 'catroot2' file. Ironically 817287
is the fix to prevent the corrupting of the catroot2 file. To fix: Find
the 'catroot2' file in C:/windows/system32. Rename the file to anything such
as catrootold. REBOOT, download and install. A new 'catroot2' file will be
generated.
