Desktop Icons

For some reason, my desktop icons have disappeared.
I can't access the recycling bin and the other shortcut
icons i had.
I have tried creating shortcuts on the desktop, but they
just won't show up...Does anyone know what happened and
how i can fix it?

Right-click the desktop, choose "arrange icons by"-->"show desktop =
icons"
