VM size varies for same application on XP

I launch word and it takes up 9MB VM. I close it and
launch it again and it takes up 18 MB VM. Close and launch
again and it takes up 9MB again. Can anyone tell me why
the VM size changes, seemingly randomly, when launching
the same application.

I'm not clear on why you care about this but I suspect that XP is simply not
reporting the correct data to you. On my system right now, for example,
there are several processes that apparently are consuming more physical than
virtual memory which seems unlikely. Whether or not that is the case, the
numbers that you are seeing are not as advertised. As the saying goes, your
mileage may vary.

I noticed that when I launched my program, sometimes it
took about 10 seconds longer than other times. Just
wondering why because it was annoying, and then noticed
the VM size difference.
