The problem was Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 811493.
The fix is Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 819634.

Well, that was an exercise in futility! Thanks, but.....
Having read both knowledge base articles, I removed the update, and the
system
rebooted without asking. Then the screen went blank. Another reboot
brought up
the option page to go to safe mode, use last know good system, etc.
No go. It always locked up before going into windows.

good thing I always do a back-up using Ghost to my 2nd drive. I was able to
restore Monday's
system.
