View Full Version : Trojan protection?

Can anyone tell me if there is a program that will monitor my computer for
any trojans, before they get in. I am running Windows XP Home, and NAV 2003.
I have the Spybot program, and Swat It. But is there something that can
protect the computer before they have a chance to get into it, and
preferably free?

I like The Cleaner by Moosoft. It's not free but is reasonably priced. They
have a trial version you can "try before you buy."

Thanks Sharon. Does it catch them before they get into the computer?

Well, Linda, this may sound odd but neither my antivirus (EzTrust Antivirus)
or the Cleaner have ever "caught" anything. Not because they're not doing
their job but because I am very careful about what I open and download. Scan
installation media for virus before using. Scan zipped files before
decompressing and after. I use a healthy firewall (also a good measure to
detect trojans that phone home). BUT am confident they would sound the
alarms if necessary. Both products I use are rated well, are updated on a
regular basis and run well with XP.

Running a system with protection (that's kept updated and current) is not a
license to do "whatever" on the internet. There are always new trojans, new
viruses and new exploits that are not covered by *any* company's product.
The computer system is still vulnerable in that time slot between discovery
and when the company's release updates. Still vulnerable until we install
those updates.

Guess I'm trying to say, combine safe computing practices with good
protection products for best results.

PS: My friend who also uses The Cleaner had it catch two immediately after
they were picked up at websites (silent download in the background). That
testimonial was what tipped the scale for me to add it to my online arsenal.

There's lots of good products out there. Find ones that are effective, that
are supported and that run well with the rest of your software. I've used
other products in the past and liked them just as well. For now, these are
the two that work best with my setup. Adaware or a similar "spyware"
detector is also a good tool to have handy.
