Had XP Professional for over a year, had to turn updates
off because none of them will install successfully
anymore. They download, but freeze during installation
and I'm forced to cancel. And Microsoft forces me to
come here to post a question because they want me to pay
for the answer to a problem they're causing. Anyone got
an answer to this?

See this page for a fix

Errors Occur When You Try to Install Updates from the Windows Update Web
Site
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;817753

Afterwards, installing the Q817287: Critical Update (Catalog Database
Corruption in Microsoft Windows XP) fix will stop this above issue from
happening again

Thanks, Gary, but unfortunately, that didn't solve the
problem. Updates are still timing out or failing.

What do you mean 'timing out or failing'? Try one at a time and post
results.

By timing out, I mean the update downloads, attempts to
install, and literally stops installing in the middle of
it. I've left one going for hours, it's obviously having
some sort of problem (and I'm on a cable modem). When
they fail, though, the microsoft web page tells me it
failed to install. I've tried one at a time, get either
of the above results. I may reinstall XP at this point &
start over, unless you know of anything else I can do.

You do turn off any anti-virus before downloading and installing any
Microsoft update, I hope.
