You can go to "Sounds and Audio Devices" in "Control
Panel" and put a check mark in "Place Volume Icon In
Taskbar". Thereafter you can click the loudspeaker icon in
the taskbar tray and place a check mark in the "Mute" box
whenever you want to silence XP. You can alos use it's
slider to adjust your XP volume at any time you like. You
can also go to "Phone and Modems" in "Control Panel",
select your modem and permanently turn off your modems
sound.
