I would like only to install Service Packs as they become
available, not the critical updates that seem to come out
every few days.

Is it possible to disable the critical updates
notification program so that I don't get pestered by it?

Thanks,

Dean Mixon

P.S. The head tech guy at a software firm told me
yesterday that critical updates are hot fixes, tend not
to be well written, and can cumulatively cause problems
with the OS.

Yes you can, to do this right click your My Computer in the start menu or on
your desktop if you have it there.
Then choose properties.
Then click on the Automatic Updates tab, and now uncheck the "Keep my
computer up to date. With this setting enabled, Windows Update software may
be automatically updated prior to applying any other updates.
Then hit OK.

Perfect. Thank you very much. Windows is a mansion (I
guess) with many rooms, rooms you can only find by trial
and error...
