I got some answers about where to locate the shortcut bar
in Office XP. I don't think I have Office XP. I have
Windows XP as an operating system, and just Microsoft
Works. Still, I'm almost positive there was a shortcut bar
on the upper right hand corner of the screen when we first
installed.
In particular, I really use the "open a document" feature.
Can anyone help me get the shortcut bar back?

You're calling a Toolbar a shortcut bar. Open MS Works Word Processor.
The top bar is the Title bar, below that is the Menu bar. Click View on
the Menu bar, select Toolbars, check Standard and Formatting. The two
Toolbars should appear. If the Toolbars are already checked, and you
have the Formatting bar (the one with the font box), the Standard bar
may be hidden. If so, put your pointer on the vertical bar at the left
end next to the font box. When it forms a double arrow, click and drag
it down. HTH

No I don't think he is. I seem to remember some annoying bar that stayed in
the upper right hand corner. This was many years ago, and I only worked with
Works for about a week so I don't know how to reenable it. However it might
help to dig around Tools>Options or something like that.

Mathew,
I'm not too familiar with Works, however, she mentioned she misses the
"Open" button, which is a standard Toolbar button on many apps. written
for Windows.
