View Full Version : Cannot get Welcome Screen at startup

Can't get the Welcome Screen at startup, at least not without giving at
least one user a password. I've followed every technique I can find to
enable the Welcome Screen. In particular I've used the Microsoft
Publication "Windows XP Inside-Out".

Giving one of the users a Password does bring up the Welcome Screen on
Bootup. Deleting the Password for all users causes the Welcome Screen to
disappear. I've spent cosiderable time chasing down Microsoft documentation
for Windows XP. The system I'm on is dual boot between two different
installations of Windows XP. The second version of Win XP does have a
Welcome Screen at Bootup.

---------------------------------------------------

I've gone off and done a little experimenting. Needless to say I had set up
users differently in the two installations of Windows XP. I've found the
answer and windows XP does have a bug. Whether microsoft will consider it a
bug or a 'feature' is anyones.guess. I had defined two Users, an
Administrator and a Guest user on the first of the two boot Systems.
Disabling the Guest account made no difference. However, defining a Limited
account brought back the Welcome Screen. It did not make any difference
whether the Guest account was enabled or disabled when this was done. I've
now defined a Limited accournt in both copies of the XP Windows installation
and am getting the Welcome Screen on both.

I'm running on a domain, so I can't experiment. Instead, I'll just comment.
When you have only one user to choose from, there is no point in showing the
welcome screen, since you would only get one choice anyway. It's nothing but
an extra step. The guest account is a special account - it's designed for
people to use in lieu of a regular account, and it has severely restricted
permissions. If they can just click on your account and get in with admin
privileges, then why would they bother signing in as guest and be very
limited? It doesn't really have a purpose, whether it's enabled or not.

All you really need to do is go to Start, Run and enter CONTROL
USERPASSWORDS2 Check the box Users must enter a username and password.
