View Full Version : Purchase of Windows XP Home edition upgrade

I am currently running Windows 98 and Windows 98 2nd
Edition on my Gateway Laptop and Desktop respectively. I
am thinking of upgrading to Windows XP Home Edition. I
have tried to understand the COA and activation and EUA.
I have not bought the software yet, so I do not have a
piece of literature to read.
The question is : Can I purchase on copy of Windows XP
Home Edition and install it on both the laptop and PC
Desktop for my own personal use. The help section on the
MS Windows site incicates you can have one copy on each
computer if the End User Agreement states it. But how do
I know what the EUA says before I buy it? Or do all
copies when purchased retail allow this option?
Thanks in advance for you help.

Hi,
You need one copy for each machine, this has always been the way with =
the license for Windows, it was just impossible to enforce before =
activation. You cannot install the same one on both systems. The license =
you may be thinking of is the Office license, which provides for =
installing on both one desktop and one laptop for personal use. Such is =
not the case with WindowsXP, where you must purchase one copy for each =
machine.

JRA;
One license, one computer, the way it has always been with all
consumer Microsoft OSs.
On the back of the retail package it says "For installation and use on
one computer..."
If you want Windows XP on both computers, you need to buy two copies.

Greetings --
As with *all* Microsoft operating systems, it's necessary (to be
in compliance with both the EULA and copyright laws, if not
technically) to purchase one WinXP license for each computer on which
it is installed. Further, WinXP differs from earlier versions of
Windows in that Microsoft has finally added a copy protection and
anti-theft mechanism, Product Activation, to prevent (or at least make
more difficult) the sort of multiple installations you're asking
about.
