Hi Everyone.
Please help.
My new Windows XP Pro laptop (a WinBook J4) keeps shutting down
automatically after two or three hours of idle time, when it is plugged in.
This should not happen.
I have the following setting in place...
.... >Start, >Settings, >Control Panel, >Screen Saver, >Power, >Power
Schemes,...
....for both "When computer is Plugged in" and "When computer is Running on
batteries",...
....set as follows...
....Turn off monitor = Never, Turn off hard disks = Never, System standby =
Never.
(Note that I have checked the BIOS Setup Utility and id does not have
anything in it related to power management or automatic shutdow.
I need the computer to stay on all the time and to only turn off when I
manually turn it off.
So, why does this box turn itself off automatically?
Please advise.
Thank you.

There can also be a "shutdown when idle" setting in the BIOS of some
computers. I am not familiar with your particular model, but someone else on
this group may be able to give you more specific information.

Does it shutdown or just stop working? In the latter case it may be forced
to stop because the system exceeds a treshold temperature. Not that strange
for a laptop, where heat is always a problem.

Are you sure there is no APM setting in your BIOS?

Hi Amir.
Unfortunately, there is NOT a "shutdown when idle" setting in the BIOS of
this machine, or anything like it.
If you think of anything else, please let me know.
Thank you.

Hi Hans.
I am not sure if it does and actual "shutdown" or whether it does some kind
of forced power-off.
If the machine is left on and I leave it alone for about 2 hours, when I
return to it is turned off.
I do not think that it is a heat problem because I when I am using the
machine for a long period of time (5 hours or more in a row) it is fine and
it does not heat up very much.
Anyway if you think of anything else, please let me know.
Thank you.

Hi Unknown.
I am sure-- there are no options for setting APM in the BIOS.
I triple checked.
(And, I know what you are talking about because there ARE such settings in
the BIOS of my other machines.)
If you think of anything else, please let me know.
Thank you.

Check for a possible BIOS update for your computer.

Hi Everyone.
OK, I have some answers and a fix (or at least a workaround).
First, some explanation.
As it turns out, some of the new Pheonix BIOS Setup Utility programs do NOT
have APM and other finer channels of control in them. Older BIOS utilities
did have these settings, but it seems the Pheonix has chosen not to put
these in because XP offers full control of these functions at the OS level.
And so on. That's the word that I am getting from the manufacturer. As it
is, I have one of these "newer" BIOS and therefore I do not have the APM
settings.
Now, for the fix/workaround to the auto shutdown issue noted below.
As it turns out, I like to run SETI@Home screen saver. When I turned it
off, the shutdown issue went away. There you go-- that was probably it.
Oh well.
"When it seems like something simple, it probably is."
I just thought you should know.
That's the news for now.
HTH.
Thank you.

BTW, Seti@home processes units faster with the screen saver off.
