View Full Version : WINXP, Defrag and Diskeeper 7.0 problems
Karl
December 6th 03, 10:17 AM
I purchased the Diskeeper 7.0 and have installed it without problems.
But doing manual defrag or Ste and Forget never brings the defrag down.
There are sometimes a couple thousand files that are still fragmented after
running Diskeeper 7.0.
Anyone else having these problems?
Tech. support so far have not been able to solve the problem.

Do you have the latest update to Diskeeper? I have noticed the 1 to 3%
of the disc remains fragmented it depends on the size of the total
fragmented files. Once it passes a certain limit the progam defrags
them.

I got the latest build 4.28
But it SHOULD defrag manually to more or less zero. It does NOT.

Hi Karl -
In general, what are the files that are remaining fragmented? (I
realize you can't list a couple thousand files here, but is there a
pattern?) Also, have you ensured that SYSTEM and ADMINISTRATOR have
full control over the folders on the disk? Finally, what steps have
been suggested by the DISKEEPER Tech Support folks? Which support rep
did you speak with (or write to)?
It's conceivable for several files to remain fragmented, but if it's
thousands, something else is coming into play here.
I hope this helps -

A question. In Diskeeper, is it possible to know which files are fragmented ?
Would like to have that information since a number of files
always remain fragmented.

Hi,
I just tested the new installation of Diskeeper 7.0 which I downloaded,
after Mr. Jenson (their new Technical Support Manager) called and which I
then installed.
It all seems to finally work and I want you to thank Mr. Lance Jenson very
much for the knowledge and time he took to settle a technical matter.
Just for the Record and for your Technical personnel and anyone else who may
have ever run into problems with Diskeeper 7.0:
There were 2 Files that stopped the proper working of Diskeeper 7.0
One was call exclude.dat
and the other
excl.all
Mr Jenson has no idea how they got there and I certainly wanted to exclude
NOTHING, I just wanted all to be defragmented.
Well ,deleting those files got Diskeeper 7.0 working fine.I can now manually
use diskeeper and get excellent results and also use the Set and Forget
option.

Hi Nitrof -
Yes, after running an analysis or defrag operation, click the "View
Report" button in the main Diskeeper display to see details about what
Diskeeper found, including the names and locations of any remaining
fragmented files, as well as how many fragments they are in. You can
print or save the report for future reference, too.
By using the info in the report, you can see if the fragmented files
are likely to be affecting your computer's performance or not. If the
fragmented files are things you never access, they are not likely to
be affecting the performance. On the other hand, if it's Word.exe
that's in a few hundred pieces and you're a writer by trade, the
performance would indeed be an issue.
I hope this helps -

Thanks.
I do not at the present time run Diskeeper, my trial period having
expired, but may in the future.
But I always wondered how I could get that information.

No, the service mgr. thinks that inadvertently I selected to exclude certain
items. He had never seen it before.
It works absolutely great now and I highly recommend it.
