View Full Version : Windows XP killer patch 04/29/03
Zak
December 5th 03, 12:22 AM
Been running XP home edition for almost 6 months with
automatic updates (patches)from Microsoft without any
problems until 04/29/03 yesterday. I get a new up date
from Microsoft that they have a new patch or fix and its
ready to be loaded into my machine. I hit the load button
and away it went into my machine and ask me if i want to
shut down and reboot. I said no that I'll do it later.
Shut the machine down for the night.
04/30/03 Today, i tried to start up my machine and its
dead, I get this message in white letters on black
background which reads" We apoligize for the
inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully, a
recent hardward or software change might have caused this
etc, etc. It gives me three choices, SAFE MODE, SAFE MODE
WITH NETWORKINg, SAFE MODE WITH COMMAND PROMPT and Start
Windows NORMALLY. Well all four don't work, Now what?

Hi Zak,
If you can't get it to load in any mode, try a repair installation (not a
reinstallation). Follow these steps to do a repair install which should
preserve your data, settings, and programs:
1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM
drive.
2. Restart your computer. If you have to, change the BIOS settings to start
from
the CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer again.
3. At the "Welcome to Setup" page, press ENTER.
4. Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.
5. Use the arrow keys to select the installation of Windows XP that you want
to
repair, and then press R to start the automatic repair process.
6. When Setup is completed, activate Windows XP.
Note that you will need your Product Key for this procedure, so have it
handy before you begin. Afterwards, you will have to reinstall updates, just
avoid the more recent ones (particularly Q811493).

Are sure the update was really from MS? Or was it an email
with an attachment?

I really don't know, but i am running MS automatic install
when they become available. I get a message that MS has a

Jim was asking the question because there is an email
going around that is supposedly from Microsoft (it isn't)
that tells you that the attachment is an update and to
install it. It's a virus, instead, so you wouldn't want to
install.
However, your method of using autoupdate is unrelated to
this, so you should have no worries there. While using
autoupdate may be convenient, I would recommend most
people get the feel of using Windows Update manually,
reading about each update, and picking and choosing what
they need/want to install. As long as you do it regularly,
there shouldn't be much of a problem.
Since Rick gave you the best idea, I won't bother adding
any advice. What exactly happens when you choose one of
the four options? You only said they don't work.
