When I try to open the Help and Support Center in the Start Menu, I
get an error message: helpctr.exe is not a valid Win32 application. Any
suggestions?
Thanks.

Try the System File Checker: run
SFC /scannow
from Start > Run. If this does not help, you may have to reinstall
Windows on top of the existing files: "How to Perform an In-Place
Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP"
Problems with H&S may also be caused by missing Registry entries. If
you use a Registry cleaner just recently you may want to undo the
changes that this tool made.

It sounds like your excel.exe file is corrupt.
Try this: insert your Office disk in your computer. Find the Excel.exe on
the CD-Rom, copy the file from the CD-Rom, and replace the Excel.exe on your
hard disk.
There are other solutions, but this has worked many, many times over the
years.
Let us know if this doesn't work.
