My "machine name" is the same as my IP address, so it
uniquely identifies my system. Is there a way to make
the "machine name" anonymous? I don't mind being ID'd on
trusted web sites, but I'd like to mask my ID on sites
until I decide whether they are to be trusted or not. I
can scramble my IP via proxy, but that is really useless
when a site can see my "machine name" and see what my true
IP is.

Thanks,
Fritz

Block port 137-139 at the firewall inbound/outbound

or

turn off Server service (but this will break file sharing on your LAN)

or

use a non-IE browser
