View Full Version : System Restore doesn't
Jerry

Running XP Pro w/SP1 and IE6 w/SP1.
Tried to download and install files from WindowsUpdate site. Download went
fine; install never started.
After much gnashing of teeth and swearing at computer I determined problem
was System Restore was not working and the required restore point could not
be created.
Turned off System Restore and proceeded to download and install all
updates/patches/fixes/etc from WindowsUpdate.
XP Pro runs just fine.
What is causing problem with System Restore? (NOTE: I do not have RealPlayer
installed; as mentioned in an earlier posting.)

Jerry;
System Restore and windows Update should have no connection.
Are you saying Windows Update did not work, but started after you
turned off System Restore?
If so, what exactly was happening when you tried Windows Update when
it failed?
How did you turn off System Restore?
Did you turn System Restore back on? If so When?

System Restore on all drives. That's how.
As I said in my original message: WindowsUpdate Download was ok;
installation failed. Even if I tried to do one file at a time the download
was ok, the installation failed.
System Restore has not been turned back on.
System Restore and WindowsUpdate do have a connection because when an update
is attempted System Restore attempts, or is required, to create a restore
point before allowing the installation of the downloaded files to proceed
and that was not happening. The files were being sent to my machine but when
installation was attempted it failed and I say it failed because the restore
point could not be created. Period!!!.
So, again, why is this happening?

Jerry;
I wish I knew the answer why, then I would have less questions.
Does it fail again after you turn back on system Restore?
Turning off/on System Restore eliminates corrupted files that often
cause issues with System Restore, although I have not heard of this
type of issue before.

Jupiter,
System Restore has not been turned back on and I see no reason to do so in
light of the problems I was having. Besides, since I was able to install all
the updates, etc at the WindowsUpdate site turning it back on would prove
nothing till the next time I find updates and try to download and install
them. That could be quite a whiel.

Interesting problem. Do you have some of the XP services disabled? Task
scheduling service, for example, needs to be enabled for System Restore to
work. It's also possible there was some corruption in the old store causing
some difficulty for Windows Update when it went to create a new restore
point. Like others have mentioned, I haven't seen any mention that the
failure to create a restore point causes an update to die out at the install
stage. If antivirus is running, it may slow up things up quite a bit. There
could be quite a few new files (the type that especially interest those
programs) and critical system changes keeping it busy.

Jerry;
At least the apparent source is known and the problem is at least
partially solved..
I will remember it and try turning of System Restore in the future to
see what the results are.

Sharon,
Explain - services disabled? What services?
I checked Accessories > System Tools > Task Scheduler and these was nothing
being scheduled.
I re-invoked System Restore and rebooted. Checked System Restore and there
were NO restore points; which SHOULD have been automnatically created. Tried
to create my own and could not. System Resore gave a NOT RESPONDING in the
Task Mnager and I had to reboot to get control back.
There is NO antivirus software running.

System services support various features within the operating system. (Third
party programs may add non-Microsoft services to your configuration.) Folks
coming to XP from a Win9x background are used to watching background
processes and programs like hawks and are accustomed to disabling
unnecessary startup items. The first look they get at Task Manager's list of
processes can be alarming. They often end up in the Services area
(services.msc) disabling items that look like something they don't need.
Unfortunately, dependent services will also become inoperable.
You mention not using Task Scheduler. I don't use it either. The program is
disabled on my systems but I keep the Task Scheduler service enabled because
other features in the operating system are dependent on it. Although not
listed in the Task Scheduler program interface, System Restore and other PC
Health features rely on this service. You also, and more importantly, need
the System Restore Service enabled.

Yes, an initial restore point should be created automatically when System
Restore is started. Any notes in Event Viewer about why System Restore is
"not responding"?

Sharon,
Services I understand now. I have not changed anything in it since
installing XP Pro but I have no idea right now as to what's in it.
Why should I leave System Restore running if it's not doing it's job by
creating restore points? It's useless right now - no restore points.

If you don't want to use System Restore, you don't have to Jerry. That's an
option too. I thought you posted because you wanted to work again. Sorry if
I misunderstood. :)
Personally, I like the feature. I've been running a bit of beta software
this year and System Restore has saved me from a lot of work when I've hit a
few glitches. I never rely on it for going back more than a week. Usually
take a restore point in the last day or so. And I manually set a restore
point before installing software or hardware.
I was doing some system changes today. At one point System Restore was
"suspended" due to lack of space on the hard drive. I cleaned up temp files
and moved my swapfile to another hard drive. After a restart, System Restore
went back monitoring but a new restore point wasn't created until I opened
the application for the first time after the reset.

Sharon,
Your comments don't address the problem.
System Restore is not working and, if turned on, it prevents updates from
being installed from the WindowsUpdate site. I'm well aware of its
capabilities.
Again, what is the connection between a System Restore that's turned on but
incapable of creating restore points and the successfull downloading and
installing of software from the WindowsUpdate site?
Re-read all my postings again.

Jerry;
The exact cause is unknown.
The issue may have been resolved by turning off System Restores (that
alone resolves a lot of issues with System Restore.
At this moment there is no way of knowing if System Restore is working
properly.
Of course if System Restore is never turned back on it will never be
known if the issue is resolved.
Part of the troubleshooting requires System Restore be turned back on
at some time, obviously proper functionality can never be determined
until that is done.
Also obviously if System Restore is no longer desired, you have
nothing more to do at the issue is then completely resolved.

Jerry,
Your problem appears to be two-fold. First, your System Restore is out of
whack. It's been non-responsive when you launch it and it is not creating
restore points automatically. These issues need to be addressed. That's what
I was aiming at with the references that I've posted for you. I selected
what looked like good launching points for the troubleshooting you'll need
to do in pinpointing exactly what is going on with your setup. There are
some known issues with System Restore, third party software and some
hardware. Most with fixes available from MS or from the vendors.
Second, is the situation with Windows Update when System Restore is active.
I haven't even touched that part of the problem yet as it may be an offshoot
of the broken behavior your System Restore is exhibiting. Once System
Restore is working properly and if the Windows Update problem persists, then
it's time to look more closely at that.
Until System Restore is working reliably on its own, you obviously will need
to suspend System Restore when you use Windows Update to avoid the trouble
it's been causing you there.

Oh well.
When I turned System Restore back on restore points were not automatically
created and I could not manually create one. Period. There is nothing else I
can do that I know of to fix that problem.
Second, the XP Pro I'm using is a 120-day evaluation copy; came with the
Office 2003 beta test that I'm not even trying because of the System
Restore/install problem, and when the 120 days are over I'll let it die. I
am very thoroughly not-impressed with XP Pro.
