Yes, with Doug's instructions the complete novice could set up a dual boot.
You misread my post.

I sent him a link that would give him excellent instructions on dual booting
and I also told him to research more about reformatting and installing 98.
The whole point of suggesting the dual boot was to see if he could
adequately set up 98. If not, then he would still have one decent OS to work
with.

I stand by what I said.

BTW, the link you sent him is not gonna help him if he runs into driver
problems and if he wants to set up his Internet connection and email again
all in 98. If he already has all that set up, why run the risk that he can't
get it all working again because he did a reformat? He should go with the
dual boot first, especially because one day soon he might have to stay with
XP no matter what.

Josh you think that setting up a dual boot is easier than reformatting and
installing Windows 98???? I don't get it. If you don't think that the person
can format a drive then how could they possibly set up a dual boot?
Obviously you didn't read the info at Doug's site. While instructions are
clear they are not simple enough, nor are they intended, for a novice to
follow. Firstly it is highly likely that a new system that ships with XP
installed will be formatted as NTFS and not FAT. Doug's info tells us that
the OP would have to acquire a third party repartitioning tool. Doug
suggests BootIt NG, which is an excellent tool, but not the type of tool
that someone who doesn't know how to format a drive would be able to use.
Secondly the OP doesn't ask for info on dual booting. He simply wants to
ditch XP and use an OS that he is more comfortable with. That's his right.
As for lost support perhaps he doesn't care about that. There are many
people still running Windows 95. Finally The link I sent him is fine because
he would read it BEFORE he uninstalled XP and reverted back to 98 not
afterward. If he has already reverted back to 98 then he would not need the
link I sent him. What I read was quite simple. He wanted info on removing
XP. I gave him a link to instructions that met his request. You infer a lot
from his post.

In hindsight what should be suggested is that he look into purchasing a
system without an OS. This will generally be less expensive and then he can
either purchase Win98 or transfer a current license that he already has over
to his new system.
