missing or corrupt file: \windows\system32\config\system

I am trying to upgrade from windows 98 to XP, every time
I run the upgrade set up and get windows XP running, when
I switch off and switch back on I get the above message
and it is seriously annoying me. I have been trying for
10 days now and it won't work any ideas????

Thanks I have tried that answer from the Knowledge base
but it still happens I'm tending towards some kind of
hardware problem, but, it happens during shutdown, there
is a noticable difference between a normal shutdown and
one where the registry gets corrupted, the difference
between a "normal" system mil and a corrupted one is an
extra 1mb approx.
Does this help anyone??
