View Full Version : WINDOWS XP Multi Computer Installation Question:

First: When initially loading XP I had to talk to
MICROSOFT for support, ONCE, which was very good and
helpful. Now, when trying to ask the following simple
question of MICROSOFT On-Line Support I am told that, "I
have already used My limit of support requests." or words
to that effect.
IS MICROSOFT SO SHALLOW & CHEAP TO OFFER YOU ONLY ONE
SUPPORT ATTEMPT AFTER SPENDING $100 FOR THEIR PRODUCT???
Now, My Question: I have heard a rumor of MICROSOFT
using some sort of, "XP Installation Tracking." To the
point that after detecting the second installation of a
Product Code, That second installation is given the
ultimatum to either buy their own copy or the installed
will be terminated. Can I or can I not install My,
LEGALLY, purchased version of XP on My Wife's computer
within the same houshold??? We have three computers
within Our home.

No, with Product Activation in XP, the mechanism allows for only one =
installation instance on only one PC. It has always been that way for =
all previous version of Windows, only now this provision was added as a =
kind of enforcement.=20
How you come to the conclusion of whether Microsoft is being "cheap" ( =
as you so place it) should be reconsidered, if your have read the EULA =
before installing it. It states exactly what it is, and how (many times) =
it can be installed. If you didn't read it, yet you clicked the radio =
button "I agree" or "I disagree" (not in those exact words), then the =
onus is in you. Best to read what applies in what you want to use.

Ron;
No, the same with all consumer Microsoft OSs.
One license, one computer, the way it has ALWAYS been.
You do not own Windows, Microsoft owns Windows.
You bought a license to use under the terms of the EULA you have
already agreed to.
It is not relevant if you are a small family, large family, business
or charity.
Your EULA allows installation on one computer at a time.

How did you use up your two free support incidents in one phone call?

As with *all* Microsoft operating systems, it's necessary (to be
in compliance with both the EULA and copyright laws, if not
technically) to purchase one WinXP license for each computer on which
it is installed. Further, WinXP differs from earlier versions of
Windows in that Microsoft has finally added a copy protection and
anti-theft mechanism, Product Activation, to prevent (or at least make
more difficult) the sort of multiple installations you're asking
about.
