I am running WinXP with SP1. Last night there was a major power outage
in my building while i was using my comp. I have two windows partitions:
one NTFS (C:) and the other FAT32 (D:). After the power came on, I
chose every option to try and start windows and everytime it restarted.
Everytime it restarted I caught a glimpse of a blue screen w/ some info
about whats wrong w/ the system but I couldn't read it fast enough. I
got out my windows installation disk and ran the recovery program. The
blue screen came up and stayed on this time. It says under the
"technical information:" ntfs.sys - address F72CF943 base at F72c000,
datestamp 3b7dc5d0. And there it was stuck; it wouldnt go into recovery
mode or anything; just stay there until i restart. I searched with
google and it seems that in several places the suggested solution to
this problem was to copy the ntfs.sys file from xp cd on to the
/system32/drivers/ folder (where ntfs.sys resides). But the problem is
how do i achieve this? I have linux installed and i can acess the
windows partitions; put linux has only read capability of NTFS; and i
have thought of using a WIN98 boot disk but i believe since its a dos
based, it cant access ntfs either.

Could somoone plz help me out of this quandry!!

Tried that with the same result as the starting the recovery console: ie
it gives the bluescreen with the tecnical info and then freezes there!!

I am at my wits end as what to do??

Since you haven't successfully booted since this failure, you could try
the Last Known Good Configuration. Boot the computer just past the BIOS
screen and start tapping the F8 key until you get a text menu. Select
"Last Known Good". If it boots successfully, your system state will be
as it was the last time you successfully booted XP.

I'll post some more tips for recovery options:

There are many recovery options in win XP. The following are in rough
order of precedence, meaning you should try the first ones before you
try later ones.

If your system will boot, try:

1) System Restore: From Start Menu>All Programs>Accessories>System
Tools.

2) System File Checker: From a command prompt, run "sfc /scannow"

3) Driver Roll Back: From Start Menu>(Control Panel)
>Administrative Tools>Device Manager

If your system will NOT boot, try:

1) Last Known Good: From F8 boot, select "Last Known Good Configuration"

Last Known Good should be used when there is a non-bootable state. Once
booted into either Safe Mode or Normal Mode, System Restore can be used
to capture optimal previous state. System Restore cannot be accessed
unless the system is bootable into one of these modes.

2) Recovery Console: From F8 boot, if installed, or CD boot, select the
first repair option.

3) CD Repair: Boot from CD, select Upgrade, then select Repair.
Preferences, apps, & settings are preserved.

4) Automated System Recovery capability in XP Pro BackUp:
see http://support.microsoft.com/?id=302894

If you forgot a password, then

8) Password recovery: From Start Menu>Control Panels>
User Accounts: User,
"Prevent a forgotten password"

These recovery options are not a substitute for a backup utility to
protect your documents, email files, etc. These recovery options are
only to recover from a bad installation or update, corrupt system file,
bad driver update, or lost/changed passwords.

I have tried booting from all the options when F8 is pressed (ie Last know
good configuration, Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Command line, Safe Mode with
Networking Support etc etc). Nothing works. ASR also doesnt work
After much searching through the net i have found some ppl who suggest that
i delete the ntfs.sys file from system32/drivers/ and copy that file from
the Xp cd on to the hard disk. But I cant really do that when i cant access
teh ntfs partitions. Could you give me sm pointers as to how i can create a
boot floppy with ntfs support which will allow me to do the above. I have
tried with the the six floppy set from MS website but it goes only as far as
the XP CD did (ie to the BSOD screen).

Thanks for all the help,
