What do your cables connect to? A router? To each
other? If you connect directly to each other, you need a
crossover cable.
Also, if you are don't have a router acting as a dhcp
server, then set up both computers with IP addresses.
Disable dhcp and assign 192.168.0.1 to one and
192.168.0.2 to the other on the same workgroup. This IP
range is invisible to the internet.
