View Full Version : Can't install Epson 1200U scanner

I'm in the process of setting up my new computer running WIN XP home. I'm
trying to install my scanner, which is an Epson 1200 U. I downloaded the
driver and it sits in a file. I then tried to install and I get a message
saying I should not proceed. I don't think Windows can find the new driver.
I point the computer to the file, but nothing happens.

Any help will be appreciated.

Did you get the driver from Epson, and if so, did you read the the =
"note" there regarding the the XP dialogue box that pops up upon =
attempting to install it? Go back, and read what ti says, it isn't our =
problem that you don't read what is clearly an easy install.

As you can tell from my original post. I did download the driver from the
Epson site. I also did read the notice. However the wording is not exactly
the message I received when I tried to install the scanner. I also never
felt my problem was "your problem".

Dim Son that you are; That "note" was meant as a generalisation, thus =
furthering the notion that maybe you should refrain from using any =
hardware add-ons to your limited PC abilities! You also didn't say you =
downloaded the driver for XP, just simply "a driver that sits in a file" =
(was it in a recliner when seated?), nothing noted by you as one that =
is/was updated for XP. Thus, I gave the reference.

Did I ask how you feel, which seems fairly low by now?

Hi, BAD.

"Silly You" has been posting these inane comments all day. Ignore them.

Unplug your scanner and reboot at least once to let WinXP "clear its head"
and forget that you ever had a scanner. Then plug the scanner in again and
reboot once more. (It DOES use the USB interface, right?) WinXP should
detect it and automatically install the driver - or ask you where to find
it.

If that doesn't work, then click Start | Control Panel | Scanners and
Cameras | Add Device. If WinXP does not automatically detect it and install
the driver, then point to the driver.

If that doesn't work, then look in your downloaded file for a Readme file,
or Setup.exe or Install or some similar program. Some downloaded driver
files are "self-extracting archives" which must be unzipped or expanded to
reveal all the drivers and other files inside.

Maybe you've already done all this, but you didn't say HOW you tried to
install. You did say you "get a message saying I should not proceed." Do
you mean the warning that the driver has not been "digitally signed" or
blessed by Microsoft? Many drivers with this warning actually work just
fine. You probably should just "Continue Anyway" and use the driver. Just
be sure you have the WinXP (or at least Win2K) drivers; Win9x/ME drivers
almost certainly will not work.
