hello,

I do not have MS Mesenger service loaded on my computer
but still get "messenger" pop-up ads. Is there a way to
stop these annoying things without buying the stupid
software that these pop-ups are advertising?

I am running win XP home addition.

Could someone or Microsft themselves PLEASE help me and
the millons of other out there to stop this barrage of
garbage.

thnak you,

Ken

if you are getting the pop-ups, then you must have messenger running. Try
installing the XP firewall.

Actually it is a simple solution that has been posted hundreds of times.
Some simple research on your part should provide the answer.

How pray tell, does a firewall stop pop-ups? Firewalls are
designed to make your computer invisible to anyone looking
not to stop transfer of data. There are hundreds of free
pop-up blockers and spyware\adware removal programs. The
Best spyware remover in my opinion is SpyBot Search and
Destroy. As for pop-up I don't use a pop-up blocker but
rather a technique whereby I place thousands of Internet
addresses in a certain file inside of XP and then the DNS
says I already have the info and so won't load the pop-
ups. An older technique but very effective. Good luck.

Well, the opinion of a self admitted idiot is not worth much.

Greetings --

Are you talking about messenger service spams, or Windows
Messenger (instant messaging) spam? They're two very different
things, and require different solutions. Based on the limited
information you've provided, I'm going to guess that you're receiving
messenger service spam. Removing Windows Messenger, or using a pop-up
blocker would naturally have no affect upon the messenger service.

This particular "sales method" is strikingly similar to the
"protection" rackets offered to small businesses by organized
criminals. No reputable business would resort to such tactics.
Particularly since they're trying to sell you a type of protection
that is already available to you free of charge.

This a type of spam has become quite common over the past few
months, and unintentionally serves as a valid security "alert." It
demonstrates that you haven't been taking sufficient precautions while
connected to the Internet. Your data probably hasn't been compromised
by these specific advertisements, but if you're open to this exploit,
you may well be open to other threats. Install and use a decent,
properly configured firewall. (Disabling the messenger service, as
some people recommend, only hides the symptom, and does nothing to
secure your machine.) And ignoring or just "putting up with" these
messages and the problem they represent is particularly foolish.
