For many DOS programs it is simply a matter of creating a desktop
shortcut to launch the DOS executable.
Or you can modify the Start menu and place the shortcut there.
Try doing it that way first. Then if any problems ensue you can
right-click on the shortcut, select Properties and change various
startup parameters and settings for that DOS application.
Note that some DOS applications are not compatible with Windows XP and
cannot be made to run. This is most often true for those
applications which have bypassed the use of application function calls
in favor of having the application program work directly with the
hardware. Games sometimes do this, especially with video; and
communications programs have often been known to do this with respect
to the serial port. Direct control of the hardware by an application
is absolutely prohibited in Windows XP (or any other NT based version
of Windows) and DOS apps that try this will invariable crash and burn
if you try to use them under Windows XP.
If you do encounter problems with a specific DOS application then you
could try posting the name of the application and a complete
description of the problem back here. Perhaps some other user has
encountered the same situation and has a solution for it.
Good luck
