xxxxx.exe could not be saved, source file could not be read

I'm all of a sudden having problems getting anythign to
download. I've tried to download software patches from 3
different sites, Microsoft included, and I get the same
error message:
"xxxxx.exe could not be saved, because the source file
could not be read. Try later or contact the server
administrator"

The xxxxx.exe is a random set of characters for the file
it's trying to download into my c"/documents/username/temp
directory. I've made sure the directory is open,
accessible, and disk isn't full. I can download music from
MusicMatch and software updates directly from one of my
applications that goes to its own storage site, but doing a
generic download for anything dowsn't work anymore.

Ideas?
