I upgraded to XP from Windows Me a while ago, and found
that all new accounts I created would start with settings
similar to my old Me settings. By this I mean the same
theme, pointers, sound scheme etc., including some
improperly displayed icons - in a word: messy.
I have long since fixed these aspects on my own account,
but I didn't know where XP was referring to when it
created the new user accounts with the old messy settings.
Until... the other day I stumbled upon a hidden folder
under Documents and Settings called Default User. Having
now realised that the ntuser.dat file is where those
original settings reside, I set about replacing them by
creating a new account, entering it and correcting the
settings to a neutral XP look (blue theme, bliss
wallpaper etc.). I then returned to my account, copied
the new ntuser file to the Default User folder, and hey
presto, every new user has a nice fresh desktop.
Now on to my REAL problem. The 'My Computer' explorer
window on MY account displays the Shared folder and Sam's
Documents, as well as Guest's Documents and Account
name's Documents for any other accounts I create.
However, any new user Is only able to see the Shared
folder here, regardless of whether they have an
administrator account or limited - they cannot view their
own 'My Documents'. I am perplexed as to why this
happens, although I will admit it may have to do with
some of the above fiddling on my part, if anyone is able
to offer a fix, It is much appreciated (and sorry I took
so long to explain it all).
