Hi, I am new to networking in fact I havent even attempted
it as yet but will be doing so shortly. I have arranged
to use ISDN through Telstra who have informed me that the
phone lines to my villa are not suitable for cable or
adsl. They will be supplying me with a modem 2 x voice and
1 x data lines or ports, I actually have one phone line
and uderstand that I will be able to take phone calls and
be online. I have one computer in another location around
3 klms from me at home, 1 laptop which comes home with my
partern each night from work and a small system my
daughter uses in another room which I think will need a
network card installed on it from what i understand, but
in all honesty I have very little knowledge with things
like this. I was told that by using ISDN we could
possibly set up a direct conection between this system at
home and another one we use at work. Does anyone know what
is involved with this? I beleive it is called VPN, and
when I enquired with Telstra they told me it was very
possible but very expensive to set up and have running.
On the other issue with the systems here in the house, if
I where to install a router rather than a hub as I was
also told that a router would be more suited for what we
have in mind, would that still be ok and operate on the
ISDN and the Modem that telstra will be providing? as I
will not being setting up until after Telstra have put me
online using ISDN. I am told that ISDN is pretty good,
not as quick as cable but since I cant have that I figure
it must be better than crummy dial up.
