If it's Windows XP Home Edition then chances are the
administrator account hasn't had a password assigned to
it yet (Home Edition doesn't force you to make an Admin
password during install by default). But the Admin
account is only available in Home Edition under safe mode
only. So if it is Home Edition try this...
When you first turn the computer on start hitting F8.
You should get a text screen asking you how you want
Windows to start. Use your arrow keys and select "Safe
Mode".
The computer should start booting (with a screen
resolution of 640x480).
Once you get to the log-in screen you should see an
account named "Admin". Click on it. If no one ever set
the admin password it should continue booting.
Once in the admin account click "Start" then "Control
Panel".
Once in Control Panel double click "User Accounts".
Select your account and select "Change Password".
Change the password to what ever you want and then reboot
the computer. (Leave the password field blank to remove
the password that is there now.)
You should be fine then.
If it's Pro Edition or someone did put an Admin password
on your Home Edition (and you don't know it) then you
should be able to make a password recovery floppy using
another computer. Details on how to make a reset disk can
be found here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?

I hope this helps.
