View Full Version : NTLDR MISSING?

I am trying to format a new WD 75 GB 7200 RPM HD and the post is ok. It
sees the Floppy, the Asus CD ROM and the WD HD.
Then it sees all the PCI's and then it stops at :
NTLDR missing. Only choice is Alt Ctl Del and that comes up the same, of
course.
Going into the BIOS and make the CDROM the 1st Bootable does not get the
CDROM either, because NTLDR missing comes up.
Cannot get to the WD floppy to format or an old WIN98 SE boot disk either.
Always NTLDR missing, that is after I chage the BIOS boot order to Floppy.
What is this error? I cannot find it in the Knowledge base of WD. Never had
before a problem with installing new drives and have been with computers
since the DOS days.
I am using (want to use) WINXP but cannot get it to install because the
NTDLR missing comes up and stops the machine (desktop) not this laptop.

All legitimate Windows XP CDs are bootable. If your BIOS is set to boot from
the CD-Rom you need to start the computer with the XP CD in the tray. You
should see a message that is displayed for a few seconds that says "press
any key to boot CD". If you don't press a key the BIOS will attempt to boot
the next device. So watch for that message. It is only displayed for about 5
secs. If your BIOS has a Quick Start feature you might not be able to see
the "press any key....." message. Look for that option in your motherboard
manual and change it in the BIOS setup. Or you might find that starting the
computer and then pressing the space bar a few times while the computer is
starting will allow the CD to boot.
Another problem you might be having is a damaged or corrupt bootsector on
the CD. If that is the case then you need to replace the CD or install XP
using the 6 floppy XP bootdisk set that applies to your version of XP

NTLDR is an NT file used during the loading of the operating system. If it
is missing or corrupt then XP can't load. You can also occasionally get this
message if you are upgrading from a FAT32 formatted Windows 95/98/Me to
NT/2000/XP see here

Thanks for the advice. I did not check the message FAST enough.
After I did, all went fine with the install.
