My daughter will be receiving a computer with windows XP
home edition on it. For the college that she is
attending, she needs Windows XP Professional. Do I need
to buy the upgrade package for XP Professional to get this?

Why not have Pro placed on it instead of Home before she gets it, since =
you stated, "She *will be* receiving a computer"?

Why would she need Pro anyway for college use???
