I have an IBM pentiumII, XP Professional. The computer is
not new, but I am new at it. I have 4 keys that are
sticking. Somedays they work, somedays they don't. The
problem is this. When I first turn on my computer, I get
a black screen with a picture of a lock and I have to type
in a password. One of the letters that sticks is in the
password, so I cannot open my computer. Is there any way
I can delete that password and go straight into the
welcome page. Please help. My husband is on Veterans
disability and we do not have the extra money right now to
buy a new keyboard. The computer is a laptop. Thank you
so much.

Follow this step to remove it.
1. Go to Control panel
2. Click administrative tools
3. Local Security Settings
4. Click Minimum password length
5. Reduce it to 0, No password required
6. Go to user account in control panel click your account and remove
password.
This will disable the password feature.

Is this the Windows XP logon or the added protection of a password that was
setup in BIOS? If it is from a setting in BIOS, change it to one that
doesn't use those sticky keys. Download a copy of the manual for your system
from IBM. These can usually be found in the technical support pages of the
manufacturer's website. The directions for entering BIOS setup and working
with the password screens should be in that manual.
If this is an XP password prompt, go to Control Panel> User Accounts. Select
"Change an account." On the subsequent screens, you can elect to change the
password.

Sharon gave you the proer advice, until you further need help. But in no =
way, do what Lloyd suggested, as that is a no-no and total tech-crap! =
Not only that, his path to there is not even possible, as he left out =
one path to get there..

Buy a new keyboard?

Depending on the model you can sometimes remove the keys and clean them. A
*small* screwdriver usually works. You just gently pry them from all four
sides until they come off, clean thoroughly with rubbing alcohol and them
replace them before moving on to the next one. I hope this works on your
laptop.
