sharing files slow

Setup:
Host: XP Pro SP1; ICS; Workgroup
Client: W98; ICS; Workgroup; sharing activated - password required

ICS works fine. Workgroup shows up on both computers.

Problem:
It takes several minutes for the host to open the folders on the guest. They
finally do open but it is slow.

Steps:
I have rerun the Network Setup Wizard; mapped the cleint drive; tried
opening from a command line. All results identical: eventually it opens the
client folders. Internet folders at ftp sites work fine.

Any suggestions as to what I should do?

Additional info.: I find event viewer warnings when these slow connecting
events occur. ID 1524 "userenv".
