I am attempting to network a computer with Win XP home and
one with Win 98; I cannot get the two comuters to 'see'
one another. I am using a network switch with nic cards
installed in both computers; as far as I can tell my
hardware and cableing are correct. The switch will show 3
sets of lights (one each for dsl modem, the xp comp. and
98 comp)with the top lights for each blinking to show
network traffic; network setup wizard has been ran on both
computers and both computers have ip addresses. I can get
on the internet with the xp computer but not the 98.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Win9x can't see Win2000/XP

By default, Win2000/XP disables NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NetBT) for selected
clients. In a peer-to-peer network without WINS, Win9x will be unable to
browse, locate, or create file and print share connections to a Windows 2000
computer with NetBIOS disabled. So, you must setup the Win2000/XP to uses
NetBIOS over TCP/IP to communicate with prior versions of Windows NT and
other clients, such as Microsoft Windows 95. Alternatively, you may want to
add NetBEUI on all workstations in the peer-to-peer network.

How do you access the internet? Cable modem or DSL? Do
you have a router that provides DHCP and NAT? If not,
does your ISP provide you with multiple IP addresses? The
reason I ask is that if you only recieve one IP address
from your ISP, and this IP is taken by the XP box, then
you will only be able to access the internet from that one
system (whichever one has the valid IP).

Otherwise you can enable netbios as Robert mentioned. Try
pinging each computer first to make sure that they
are 'seeing' each other.

Good luck.
