Win 16 was unable to enter protected mode

Win 16 subsystem was unable to enter protected
mode,dosx.exe must be in your autoexec.nt and present in
your path.

Windows XP home.The dosx.exe is in the autoexec.nt
I am at loss how to get around the problem.Any assistance
would be appreciated.
