That is how it was already set. In fact It is not just buttons, but also
most links! I can only assume that something is seriously wrong with my
IE6 and will need to reinstall (somewhat more complex under WinXP than
Win98 I believe).
I hoped it might be a user setting, so I created a new user - but the
problem persists there as well.

It's almost as though left-click ceases to work within some web pages.

Done that - still no change. Rather suggests it may need an XP repair!

For IE and OE repair see item Q318378 at the MS KB site.

My thanks to those who took the time to answer my query. The problem is
still there -- highlighted url links not responding when posted in e-mail or
newsgroups, no error messages, just not working. I can work around this by
copy-and-paste, which since I don't do this too often, has not held me up
too much. I did download the Microsoft Knowledge Base article recommended by
Ramesh and found it interesting and informative. I think I'll proceed slowly
from here on, since the Registry might be involved, and I want to feel more
knowledgeable about the whole matter before I take any specific action.
Again, my thanks.

Dan, sometimes links break in email and newsgroups.
In other words, only a part of the text for the URL becomes an active link.
The email/news program inserts a line break at a certain point and the
remaining characters that are needed to get the site are *not* active.
Solution is to click the link. Then copy/paste the remaining portion to the
address bar and press enter. A pain but until the email/news program
fixes that fault, it's the only way I know of to get around it.

Thanks for the input, Sharon.
This is a new laptop I'm using, and in trying to customize it, and since
I'm not too pleased with IE, I used a CD I had for Netscape Communicator 4.7
and tried to install it. It didn't work on two attempts and I removed it
each time with the Add-Remove program. I've noticed now that if I shut down
the computer and then restart it and log on to IE, I get an error message
saying that "Netscape cannot find
'C:\PROGRA~1\Netscape\COMMUN~1\Program\netscape.ex e'. I click on the X and
delete the error message, and everything works fine except for links not
working in e-mail and newsgroups (work okay on the Web -- Google, for
exmple). Also, when I click on my ISP (Earthlink) Web button, I get an error
message saying "Cannot find netscape.exe." Again, deleting the message by
clicking on the X allows the computer to function, with the exception of the
link problem.
As I've mentioned, I work around this link problem by copying and pasting
the link url into the IE address bar. However, I'm thinking of perhaps
switching to another ISP and another browser in the hope that this will
clear up the link problem. But I'm proceeding slowly now and won't take any
specific action until I know more about what I'm doing.
It does seem that, in attempting to install Netscape Communcator 4.7, I
fouled something up. If you or any of the other MVPs out there can offer any
insight, I'd appreciate very much hearing from you.
Best wishes -- Dan

Welcome, Don. It sounds like the failed installation of Netscape made some
changes that are related to the default browser settings. Have you tried
resetting IE as the default browser yet? Internet Options> Programs. Click
the Reset Web Settings button. Also check the box for IE to check that it's
the default browser. If the box is already checked, remove the check and
then replace it. Close IE to apply the settings change. Then launch it and
take it to a website. When it asks if it should be the default browser, say
yes to confirm.
If you've gotten that far and are still stuck with the non-existent
Netscape trying to launch, I would suggest heading over to their online
support area. Dig around for uninstall info that will help you to manually
remove whatever is lingering on your system from that failed install.
I helped my brother with removing Netscape a few years ago. I remember
searching through the file system and the registry to surgically remove
remnants but don't remember enough details to offer concrete suggestions.

That worked perfectly, Sharon. Bless you and thank you.
