internet connection fails

in xppro, my internet connection fails after a few
minutes. but only through windows programs. in cmd
window it will ping anything successfully.

this machine is going through a router to a cable modem,
just like the machine next to it that has no problems at
all. also xppro. norton utilities is turned on on both
machines.

any ideas why there is a failure?

The only thing that comes to mind is a corrupt TCP/IP protocol stack. If
you're getting problems at the application later, that's at the top of the
food chain. There are a 6 more layers of the OSI model between your
application and the Internet.

When you ping from the command prompt I suspect you're going through a lot
fewer layers of software abstraction.

You might try uninstalling then reinstalling the TCP/IP protocol?
