Win98 format blocks bad sectors and formats all dick, but Win2K and WinXP
formats try to recover bad sectors, do it during 5-10 minutes, next turn off
screen and continue 5-10 minutes, and next very quickly (no opportunity to
read) display blue screen and reboot PC leaving disk unformatted.

Do you have any idea how to format disk with bad sectors to NTFS.

If it won't format it is time to replace the drive. Why would you trust one
with bad sectors anyway?

Almost all drives have bad sectors, you just never see them because they're
marked out at the factory. In 9x systems the /U switch with the FORMAT
command would retest them, and yeah, it could take a long, long time.

Unless you really need to do a complete format, use the /Q switch for a
"quick" format. This just wipes the File Allocation Table (or its
equivalent) as if the drive had been formatted.

Ok, but I really need a complete format as a disk in FAT format now, but
should be in NTFS for WinXP. What to do if I need to format during
installation. Do you know what commands should be used in unatted file to
force format such disk in NTFS and block bad sectors?
Quick format does not do this.

Alex,

I'd set the AutoPartition setting to 0 and choose the partition manually.
That way you'll get the option of a full or quick format. I'm not sure how
to tell it to do either automatically.

The above KB article gives information on the Repartition switch in the
[Unattended] section.
