ICS problem on home network

Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help restore my daughter's faith in me being able
to fix anything. I have an XPhome machine networked via Xover cable to a
WinME machine. The XP machine is also connected via cable to the internet.
The file/print sharing works fine between the machines, but for the last
couple of weeks internet browsing on the client WinME machine has not
worked, returning "DNS or server not found". At first I thought it was my
3rd party firewall software but I have removed that in favour of the XP ICF
which has made no difference. I know it is possible to get this working
since it was ok for about a month - I cannot put my finger on what changed
to stop it working.
I have tried rerunning the home networking wizard but it fails on the XP
machine -

Do yourself a favour... Forget ICS.. buy a cheap router (4 port) with WAN
uplink for around $100 AU.. end of problem. When ICS works well, it works
well...... when not, its a pain in the arse..

Hi

I'm assuming from your description that you can browse the internet from
the ICS gateway? Which third-party firewall did you have and how did you
uninstall it?

Hi Bill,
It was PCcillin 2003, I uninstalled it using the software provided
uninstaller.
Apparently this firewall is not compatible with ICS even though I had the
ICS
working with it for about a month. To confirm your assumption, yes I can
browse
the web from the XP machine acting as gateway. I'm beginning to suspect
something
hs changed on the XP machine that is not allowing ICS to work, hence the
failure of the
home networking wizard. I have tried researching what the settings should be
on the web
to do it manually with no luck, hopefully someone here can at least tell me
if the ipconfig
data is correct or not...

Ok. If you must...... The only thing I can see that might be wrong is that
you have DHCP enabled on the ME machine but not the gateway machine... Take
out the DHCP on ME PC and only leave the default gateway reference in. You
really don't need DHCP as you have assigned a static address to both PCs.
Also Win XP firewall may not be allowing you through. Disable it on the XP
box and see if you can get through. I've had a similar problem in the past
with ICS and XP f/w.

thanks for trying, but neither of these suggestions fixed the problem. Out
of desperation I even reinstalled Me on the client and ran the XP nw setup
wizard on it again, I am back where I started with no internet on the
client.. sigh.. at least the file/printer sharing still works. This is
frustrating as I said before, it WAS working. GRRR. I was going to upgrade
the client to XP home as well, but I have serious doubts as to whether it
will make a difference.

Like I said that was the only thing I could see that was wrong with your
setup, everything else looks OK. I can see you are with bigpond so proxy
settings are not applicable in your case, (that was the only other thing I
could see that might be an issue). I still reckon the easiest option is the
router route. BTW, ME was the worst GUI OS M$ ever brought out.

Hmm as a matter of interest what do you have in your browser under Internet
options > Connections?
