View Full Version : Can't complete an XP Home Install

I just put together my new computer and purchased a copy
of XP Home. My first attempt at installing XP Home worked
fine, after one blue screen error with an automatic reboot
and setup restarting. But it kept crashing and having
multiple errors before and after hardware drivers were
installed, same blue screen but would shut down so fast I
could not read it. I them formatted and attempted to
reinstall windows again thinking it was related to the
error during the first install. All of these attemps
ending the same way but at different times during the
installation of XP Home. The blue screen that was
flashing before was this time staying up so I could see
what was going on. It stated that it had stopped setup
because of a detected error to prevent damage. Then says
it is the NTSF.SYS file that is having the problem. It
also did a complete physical memory dump during the
display of this same screen. I removed all cards but the
video card and still the same problem. I am starting to
think that my cd is corrupted or bad in some way. Any
help or thoughs into this would be great, because if there
is a way to resolve this myself I am happy to do it, if I
need to get a replacement cd from where I got it, I will
do that.

I suffered this a while ago myself and it took me weeks to work out. *sniff*
so much data loss. *cries*

Anywho, what I ended up doing was a complete repartition and all that nasty
stuff.
Since you have already formatted, this should not be so problematic for you.

Essentially what is wrong (as far as I could tell amugnst my tears) was that
the partition table had been corrupted beyond repair for a format.

So, find a win98 boot disk, fire up fdisk and remove all partition(s) (if
you have data on one or two, be careful).
Then run setup again and allow the setup to recreate the partition.
Let me know how it goes.

Kind regards, Matthew.

Well actually I removed all partitions last night and
tried anew one last time, same thing. I think I am going
to try and install 2000 tonight to verify hard drive and
all are fine and to point out if my cd for xp home is just
missing some files or has some corrupted files. But I am
going to completely remove all partitions and format the
harddrive to get xp gone before hand, so I will be doing
that again anyways. I will let you know what happens.

P.S. luckily this is a computer I just built, so I have
no information to lose because, sadly, I can't even use my
new computer yet :(

I actually wiped out the partition completely last night
(only had 1) and same issue. I am really thinking my
installation cd is missing or has a few corrupted files,
namely the NTSF.SYS which is a big problem. I am going to
try and install 2000 tonight to make sure all my hardware
is working fine, plus if that works then I know the
harddrive and all is fine and the cd is the culprit. I
just want to use my new computer, and this is not helping
that happen any time soon.

Luckily this is a computer I have just built, so no info
to lose because it actually hasn't done anything but crash
a lot and not install thus far :)

Thanks for the input.

If you couldnt tell how out of it I am between all this
mess and work, the 2 different messages saying the same
thing should prove it :)
