View Full Version : Two-sided printing

Since I bought a new computer with Windows XP, I have been unable to print
on both sides of the paper using my printer. Never had this problem with
Windows Second Edition.

Anyone know the solution to this problem?

Greetings --

Do the WinXP-specific print drivers, as provided by the printer's
manufacturer, offer a "both sides" printing option? If not, you'll
have to discuss the issue with the printer's manufacturer. (By the
way, you never bothered to mention the brand and model of your
printer. How in the world did you expect anybody to be able to help?)

The printer in question is a HP 882C. There was a "printing option" under
properties with Windows Second Edition. This is no longer available with XP.
In "Printing Preferences" there is an "Advanced" box with "Document
Options." Here the "Advanced" printing features are "Enabled." I'm assuming
that the "Advanced " features has to do with two-sided printing.

And I have the drivers up to date. I've been to the HP web pages but have
been unable to find anything about printing on both sides of the paper.

Will appreciate any suggestions you can offer.

Thanks, Laurann

Your double-sided print option is gone forever unless you change printers or
find some third-party printing software that will work with your HP model.
The drivers and software for XP on the HP website will not give you your
double-sided print back.

Very disappointing! The sad thing is that I just purchased a new HP pcs
1210xi all-in-one and I can't get it to print on both sides of the paper
either. Bought this to replace my One Touch Visioneer 7600 scanner which was
not compatible with XP (no driver updates available.) New technology is nice
but costly.

Thanks for enlightening me.

Greetings --

Basically, from what I gathered from HP's web site, that model
printer was designed for Win98 or WinMe. It will work with WinXP, but
HP has decided _not_ to provide OS-specific drivers for either Win2K
or WinXP. Instead, they submitted their generic ink jet driver
package to Microsoft for inclusion on the OS installation CDs. These
generic drivers provide basic printing capabilities, but rarely have
the full feature set of the specially designed drivers.

What all this boils down to is that HP has made the "business
decision" to effectively abandon on-going support for the DeskJet
882c, and for anyone who is still using one. This leaves you with 3
options, none of which you will probably care for, nor do I blame you:

1) Give up the idea of printing on both sides of the paper.

2) Manually print the odd numbered pages, turn over and reinsert the
paper, and then manually print the even numbered pages.

3) Replace the printer with one that has all of the features and
capabilities that you want and/or need. May I suggest a non-HP
product?

Go to www.fineprint.com download a copy of FinePrint 5.1, prints 2 sides =
(you need to turn the paper) and more.

The third-party software FinePrint is not free unfortunately. So try this
instead: To save paper, you can print all odd pages first, reinsert them
into the printer and then print all even pages. Even your old printer should
do this, but you might have to spend some time finding it.

BTW, if anybody tells you this is not the fault of XP, it is actually. Your
HP software that allows double-sided printing will work in 98, but it will
not work in XP. Is it really the fault of HP because it did not include
everything to be compatible with XP or is it the other way around? Should HP
have to change everything because MS changed its OS? Microsoft has
rudimentary drivers built into XP that allow printing from various printers,
but these built-in drivers usually don't include special features like
double-sided printing. The HP 900 models and above, however, will print
double sided, although that does not necessarily include the photo-printing
machines.

Greetings --

You're quite incorrect.

Microsoft has _never_ developed or provided device drivers for any
hardware components not of it's own manufacture. The device drivers
included on Microsoft's OS installation disks have always been
provided, for that express purpose, by each device's respective
manufacturer. These drivers must be submitted to Microsoft for
testing and inclusion well in advance of the OS's public release.
Naturally, being a business and not a charity, Microsoft charges these
manufacturers a fee for such testing, just as it does for testing and
inclusion on the HCL or for Windows Logo certification. Many device
manufacturers take the cheap way out and provide only the basic
functions in these drivers, to keep the testing simple, to reduce the
risks of compatibility issues, and to keep testing costs down.

It's HP that abandoned its older product(s) and customers;
Microsoft merely tested and included the product provided.

Using an old HP deskjet I notice that in several programs 2-sided
printing is not included. However, what is included is print odd or
even pages which provides the needed 2-sided print.

Thanks for your input, guys. I suppose, judging by your remarks, there's no
need contacting Hewlett Packard to request software to replace the special
features that are no longer available. I will try the odd page printing.
I'm guessing that would be in the "page range" where I have a choice of
selecting "all" or "pages."

Again, many thanks!

No, that is not where it is at. It will actually say "odd" or "even."

In MS Word, for example, it is built in to what Word sends to the printer.
You must do file>print... to get the dialogue. You cannot just hit the
print icon. My "driver" properties does not have an option to print only
odd or even pages. The manufacturer's may have (and they do seem
different), but the windows version does not.

It may depend on the program that you are trying to print from.

BTW, your MS Word or your print box might refer to double sided printing as
"duplex." I just found in MS Word an option called duplex printing that
requires me to check a box that says even numbers and a box that says odd
numbers. If you use MS Word 2002, you can print double sided.

I guess MS took care of me afterall.
