Try these three suggestions:
1) Open My Computer window and choose the Tools menu option. In the Folder
Options window, click the "Use Windows Classic folders" radio button, then
click OK.
2) Right-click your Desktop and select Properties.
On the Desktop Display properties, click the Appearance tab.
Under the Windows and buttons pull-down menu, select Windows Classic.
Click Apply to see your new look.
Click OK to close the Desktop Display properties.
3) Here is a link you might want to look at that has screenshots in its
tutorial:

Right click the desktop and select Properties/Appearance tab. Under Windows
and Buttons menu, select Windows Classic Style to get the old, flat boring
look. :)
