If I have typed a document and want to insert a picture,
I click on Insert and then Object. This navigates me to
pictures stored in My Pictures. Then when I click on the
relevant picture it opens in Windows Picture and Fax
Viewer. What on earth do I do from here? All I get is an
icon with the file name inserted. How do I get the actual
picture in my document please?

That is the wrong option if you simply want to insert a picture. Go to
Insert/Picture/From File.

Try copy and paste the picture or object into you document...
