I bought my computer with xp installed. It must be a bad
copy or illegal one, because I cannot get updates.

Can I purchase a new OEM copy and install over this one?

Thanks

No, An OEM copy can only be installed on a clean (empty) hard disk.
If you wish to retain your settings then you need to purchase a FULL RETAIL
copy and perform a repair install.
Current estimated retail price for a full copy - Windows XP Professional -
$299 from http://shop.microsoft.com/Referral/Productinfo.asp?siteID=10798

truth to the matter marianne, even if your copy is a pirated copy, you can
still update with windowsupdate.com except for the sp1 patch.

but we do appreciate the fact that you would rather get a genuine xp copy.

however, if you could find the certificate of authenticity in your computer
(a hologram sticker pasted on your computer), then most likely, you have an
original copy.

you may check it out at http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/howtotell.
